Tomasz Marceli Szarota (born 02 January 1940 in Warsaw)- Polish historian (professor) and publicist

Son of Rafał Marceli Blueth (1891-1939), a professor of Russian studies, critic, catholic publicist and literature historian, working for ''Verbum” newspaper, shot dead by the Nazis couple of weeks before the birth of his son, and of Elida Maria Szarota (1904-1994), a humanist and germanist.

Historian, specializing in modern history of 20th century, especially in the issue of Nazi occupation, Polish resistant movement during World War II and in the topic of war-time everyday life in Warsaw, as well as in other European capital cities. In years 1957-62, he studied history at the Warsaw University (master's thesis on the January Uprising  under the supervision of Stefan Kieniewicz). Since 1962, Szarota has been employed in the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. After having obtained the professor title, since 1991 he has led the Institute of Polish History after 1945. In 1998 he was a visiting fellow in Institut fuer die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna. He was awarded several scholarships for studying abroad, e.g. in Germany (Humboldt's Scholarship), France and Belgium.

He was the editor-in-chief of publication series ''Poland 1944/45- Studies and Materials” by the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His texts were published in ''Przegląd Historyczny”, ''Kwartalnik Historyczny”, ''Dzieje Najnowsze”, ''Więzi”, ''Tygodnik Powszechny”, ''Polityka”, ''Rzeczpospolita”, ''Gazeta Wyborcza”.

Szarota is a member of the Scientific Council of the Center for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin and of the Scientific Council of the Polish Biographical Dictionary, of the Program Council of the Museum of World War II, the chairman of the Experts' Committee of the scientific program '' Victims of the Nazi Regime-the Database of Polish citizens repressed under the German Occupation”, a member of the Editorial Board of the series ''W krainie PRL” by the TRIO publishing house, the chairman of the ''Nagroda ''Klio” Wydawców Książki Historycznej” Prize , the member of the Prize of Władysław Pobóg-Malinowski's and of Prize named after Tomasz Strzembosz's juries, a member of the ZAIKS organisation and of the Warsaw Scientific Society.

Married (since 1962) to Anna Manteuffel (daugther of Tadeusz Manteuffel), son, Piotr, (born 1966) is a professor in Psychological Institute of the  Polish Academy of Sciences and in Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
